Wind-it and Towerco of Madagascar (TOM) launch the first commercial pilot of Wind-it, a built-to-energy telecommunication tower integrating vertical axis wind turbines
The Wind-it tower constitutes a key new step in technical innovation for off-grid/poor-grid telecommunication sites.
Thanks to its bespoke patented structure, up to four vertical axis wind turbines can be integrated into a 30 to 80m high tower which in turn is capable of hosting numerous mobile network operators.
The resulting autonomous energy production generated from the core wind turbines and a complementary mini solar unit can reduce or even entirely avoid the necessity for a costly, polluting traditional diesel generator.
In addition to this primary role, the fully modular Wind-it tower can be configured to produce energy surplus, thus contributing to local electrification.
A commercial pilot agreement has now been signed with TOM, a Tower company based in Madagascar, within the framework of the rural extension of TOM network, which favours autonomous and renewable power generation solutions.
The expansion of mobile phone networks, an increasing sharing of telecommunication towers through colocation and the growing environmental concerns drive the development of Wind-it.
The initial target market is Africa where ten thousand telecommunication towers should be built in the next five years.

2015 French ENGINEERING Prize :
Wind-it wins the Industry & Technology consulting Prize for its telecommunication tower incorporating vertical axis wind turbines.
The French Engineering Prize awards engineers for the quality of conception and conduct of outstanding projects in terms of innovation and creativity. This competition is organized by Syntec, the French professional federation of the engineering sector, with the support of several French ministries.
The 2015 edition of the Industry & Technology consulting Prize was won on October 14th by Wind-it for its autonomous power tower for mobile telephony. The Wind-it technology integrates multiple vertical axis wind turbines in a high-rise exostructure specifically designed to handle this load.
This technology is the result of intensive R&D efforts: structural, aerodynamic and mechanical engineering, 2- and 3-dimensional numerical simulations and wind tunnel model tests. A 50-meter-high prototype (see photo), incorporating three vertical axis wind turbines, is in service for testing and optimization since early 2015.
The innovation, that can be coupled with a mini solar installation, avoids the use of the expensive traditional solution of diesel generators. The Wind-it tower can be dimensioned to produce energy surplus, thus contributing to local electrification by providing a robust mix of renewable sources.
Wind-it includes several patents that make it radically innovative compared to existing towers, wind turbines and renewable multi-source power systems. These innovations affect the structural architecture of the tower, as well as the architecture of the wind turbines and the regulation of their energy production.
